Hungry, I really thank you (and Linden Lab as well) for being so informative on everything you do with the servers! I'm fascinated about how easily you give out information both on your limitations and the cool things you're proposing to do. Kudos to you all, you're really great guys to share that with us!

Every now and then someone will yell "yuck, MySQL sucks" and suggest Postgres or something or other. Well, my own experience with several database systems - especially on the open source world - shows that nothing beats MySQL in speed on reading stuff from tables, if the queries are not overly complex. Still, I'd say your systems will have LOTS of table updates as well. My own experience has been mostly on fine-tuning databases with 1000:1 ratios read/write, and after a while, there is just one choice: go to RAM disks :) With MySQL replication working in the background, there is no way you'll lose critical data. Of course, on different read/write ratios, this probably won't work that well :(

I also find it cool that you get ideas from Apple's Mac OS X to replicate stuff in Linux! Wow, the world is really a bright, new, strange place to live. I remember that the first streaming (video) server I set up was Apple's... I never thought I would live to see Apple "give for free" that kind of software. Back to your issue, yes, OpenLDAP with pam_ldap will certainly do the trick. The very cool thing is, you would be able to manage all logins/passwords graphically from your nifty Mac laptop :) ... and let the wonders of open source software magically replicate all your servers.

Cool stuff.
