TAKING IT OFF TO GIVE IT AWAY (DISASTER RELIEF, PART III)

Used to be, right about this time of the year, southeast Asian vacation isles like Phuket and Koh Phi Phi would be swamped by tourists, and all night, the warm moonlit beaches would roil with hundreds of young, gorgeous, half-naked people, endlessly dancing. For reasons too obvious and painful to mention here, this year is quite a bit different.

Within days of the tsunami striking, residents in Second Life had put together an event to raise funds for its victims-- Jinny Fonzarelli was the first, and as of yesterday, her "Mahoosive SL 24 Hour Fundraiser" has raised nearly L$280,000-- over US$1100, at current market rates. ("I'm utterly gobsmacked," Jinny says, of the tally.) These donations will go directly to DEC, a UK-based relief organization. The fundraiser she runs has been extended far beyond its 24 hour limit, however-- more information on the next Mahoosive event at the end of this entry. (Along with many, many more.)

At the same time, other groups have joined the relief effort, and it's ironically appropriate that they also involve hundreds of young, gorgeous, half-naked people endlessly dancing.

"We partied hard and got nakey for cold hard cash," Willow Zander informs me. "Our shift was at the Brimmie, and bloody hell, did we pack the sim out." She means the Brimstone, a heavy metal nightclub, which set up a Mahoosive relief donation box of its own, and as of yesterday, has collected $L132,000 in relief donations. (I.E., about 500 bucks more, for DEC.)

"We did various things" to raise that, she tells me. Willow Zander is a lithe, curvaceous brunette in a black leather bustier. "People auction, goods auction, goth avatar contest, movies star avatar contest. I promised to get nakey if we reached 100k, so..." she trails off, and grins.

"So you did?!"

"Yeah," Willow laughs. "Then I couldn't get my bloody clothes back on, could I?

"Well," she amends, "I kept a thong on."

But more than the striptease or any of the particular events, it was residents' eagerness to give that brought in such a large sum, Jinny Fonzarelli tells me. "People's generosity," she says, "most of it was donations. The event what made the most money, was a drop compared with the cash that flowed in."

Then again, it took as much generosity to stay up at all hours, to keep the telethon running. "There's a girl at my work has lost most of her family in Sri Lanka," Jinny Fonzarelli tells me. "I've been to Phuket. I'd go back like a shot. Cool place. I'm thinking of e-mailing some friends I have in India, they are helping the relief effort there. I want to go over, but I don't have money for the flights, etc."

"If you go there," a friend named Riffey4 DeGroot pipes up nearby, "only go there if you have skills they need. They have enough people there..."

"That's what I want to find out, Riffey," Jinny replies. "I'm a qualified social carer with a strong stomach. I have no idea how useful that will be. But there seems to be a lot of unsupervised kids." So for now at least, her efforts are concentrated in-world.

"I was reading the story in our local paper," Willow Zander tells me later, "About the woman that had to choose between her 5 and 2 year old... the overall numbers are amazing, you wouldn't imagine them to get so high, and that isn't counting the bodies they can't find, and never will." She adds a sad face to her statement, but somehow, I suspect ":-(" conveys just a fraction of what she's trying to express right now.

So the fundraising continues.

"Yeah," says Willow, gamely. "We are having some this weekend.
And will carry on until we are told to stop."
