THE GREAT EXPEDITION II: A PREFACE

"Traverse the entire continent, Linden? On foot? Why, sir, why in bloody blazes?"

It is a question I hear often, in the Royal Society drawing room, said in tones of scorn and scarce-veiled reproach. But to be sure, it is also a fair question, and before I here set down my full account of the expedition that followed, I should explain at least to you, good reader, why my company and I did embark on this journey.

At heart, it is a question of apprehension. For indeed, not a day goes by, in my capacity as this world's chronicler, when I am not overwhelmed by the length and breadth of this continent, the velocity at which its populace grows, and the rapidity that its surface changes, with empty fields and valleys transformed into entire teeming cities in the space of days, or transmuted into forms even more mysterious and wonderful. And though the world has grown twice in size, since my last expedition 8 months ago, it is sure to grow far, far more, in the 8 months to come. If I was to capture a moment in its evolution, and convey as best as humanly possibly the fullness and scope of its bounds-- for that is my ultimate calling-- this would truly be my last opportunity to do so, at least a foot-borne traveler.

For that reason, I made plans, preparations, and called out for a party of fellow adventurers. And on Thursday, March 04, in the 2004th year of our Lord, we did set out on foot, beginning in the Southern region of Baker, to undertake this very task.

What follows, then, is an account of that expedition.

-- Sir Hamlet Linden, Explorer
